In 1887, the founding members of the Benton Club, led by Winslow Judson, purchased three existing buildings at the corner of Seventh and Faraon streets and began construction to combine the structures into a single building. The project was completed in November of 1887, and in 1900, the stables were converted to serve as a ballroom for the Benton Club.
The Benton Club quickly became a center of social life for St. Joseph businessmen, and it continues in that role today. Members enjoy fine dining for lunch and dinner throughout the week, as well as access to parlors and meeting rooms that can accommodate a wide range of groups.
Throughout the years, the Benton Club has remained largely unchanged, but in 2016 major renovations served to update the building as well as provide structural improvements for posterity. In 2017, The Benton Club was added to the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service.
